A manhunt is still underway for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 7-month-old baby girl who was struck by a stray bullet during a broad-daylight attack in Brooklyn, authorities said.
The infant, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was in a stroller being pushed by her mother when gunfire erupted around 1 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets.
Police say two suspects riding a moped opened fire on a group of people in what investigators believe was a gang-related shooting. The baby was struck in the head, while her 2-year-old brother suffered a graze wound.
Family members ran for cover inside a nearby bodega as shots rang out. Moments later, the child’s mother realized her daughter had been hit. The baby was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the gunmen fled the scene on the moped but crashed into a vehicle just blocks away. One suspect was taken into custody and hospitalized, while the second suspect escaped and remains at large.
The New York Police Department has launched an intensive search for the remaining suspect and is urging the public to come forward with any information. A $5,000 reward is being offered for tips leading to an arrest in the case.
Investigators believe the infant was not the intended target, describing the shooting as a senseless act of violence tied to an ongoing dispute.
The tragedy has sparked outrage across New York City, with officials condemning the violence and renewing calls for stronger efforts to curb gun crime. Family members described the baby as joyful and full of life, with loved ones now left grieving an unimaginable loss.
Anyone with information is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers as the investigation continues.
