A 28‑year‑old Philadelphia man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing an employee at a local Planet Fitness gym following a dispute over unpaid membership fees, authorities announced.
According to the Cheltenham Township Police Department, officers were called to the Planet Fitness franchise at 1000 South Easton Road in the Wyncote section of Cheltenham Township just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 for reports of a violent altercation. When first responders arrived, they found a male employee suffering from multiple stab wounds, which were considered life‑threatening. The victim was rushed to a local trauma center for emergency treatment and is currently recovering.
Police identified the suspect as Davier Massey, 28, of Philadelphia. Investigators say Massey had been banned from the gym a day earlier after failing to pay an outstanding membership bill. Despite the ban, he returned to the facility twice on Thursday, causing disturbances, police said. During his second visit, an argument with an employee escalated into violence, and Massey allegedly stabbed the worker multiple times.
Massey was located “a short distance away” from the gym shortly after the attack and taken into custody without further incident. He now faces a long list of charges, including criminal attempt‑murder of the first degree, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime, terroristic threats, criminal mischief, harassment, and disorderly conduct. He is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility pending further court proceedings.
In a statement, Planet Fitness said it was “saddened by the incident” and that the company’s “thoughts are with the team member as they recover.” The franchise owner is cooperating with local law enforcement’s investigation.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the stabbing or has additional information to contact detectives.
