Michael Sumler, affectionately known as “Chicago Mike,” a long-standing member of the iconic R&B band Kool & the Gang, tragically passed away at the age of 71.
According to police, he died in a car crash in Mableton, Georgia on Sunday, when his vehicle collided head-on with another car on Veterans Memorial Highway. Sumler was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver, a 33-year-old male, was unharmed.
A Multifaceted Talent
Sumler’s journey with Kool & the Gang began in 1985 when he was discovered by a band security guard. Initially joining as a stylist and choreographer, he soon became an integral part of the band’s live performances as a hype man and backing vocalist. His vibrant energy and charismatic stage presence endeared him to fans worldwide. Beyond his musical contributions, Sumler also served as the band’s wardrobe valet from 2004 to 2015 and later supported their LeKool champagne events.

The news of Sumler’s passing has sent ripples of sorrow through the music community. Robert “Kool” Bell, the band’s founding bassist and the last surviving original member, expressed deep grief, stating, “We’ve lost another brother, and the stage won’t be the same without Mike.” Adrian Meeks, a close friend of Sumler, described his death as “a devastating blow” and highlighted Sumler’s dedication to mentoring young musicians and his unwavering support for others’ success in the industry.
The Legacy of Kool & the Gang
Formed in 1964, Kool & the Gang achieved monumental success, including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and 31 gold and platinum albums. Their hits, such as “Celebration” and “Funky Stuff,” have become staples in music history. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, a testament to their enduring influence on the music industry.
