Horror fans, get ready—Sleepaway Camp is coming back to life!
Kenan Thompson, best known for his longtime run on Saturday Night Live, is stepping behind the camera as producer for a new reimagining of the 1983 cult horror classic. The project is being developed through AFA, the production company Thompson co-founded with CEO John Ryan Jr., who recently acquired the rights to the original film.
Perhaps most exciting for fans, Robert Hiltzik—the original writer and director of Sleepaway Camp—is returning to write and direct the reboot. Script development is already underway, though details about the plot and casting remain tightly under wraps.
“We’re staying true to the OG story while Robert adds in some insane new twists,” Ryan Jr. teased.
Hiltzik echoed the enthusiasm, noting that while several companies had approached him over the years about remaking Sleepaway Camp, AFA was the only one that fully embraced his vision. “I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp,” he told Deadline. “This partnership ensures the integrity of the original film for longtime fans, while introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.”
Released in 1983, Sleepaway Camp became infamous for its summer-camp slasher setup, outrageous kills, and shocking twist ending that has sparked debates about gender identity and horror tropes for over four decades. Now, 42 years later, the franchise is poised to slash its way back into pop culture with a mix of classic horror vibes and modern updates.
No release date has been announced, but horror fans can expect plenty of blood, camp, and surprises.
