The Rookie Universe Expands!
The Rookie franchise is officially growing. ABC has given the green light to the pilot for The Rookie: North, with Emmy-nominated actor Jay Ellis set to headline the potential new series. Ellis, known for his NAACP Image Award–winning performance as Lawrence Walker on HBO’s Insecure, continues to rise across television and film as he steps into this next major role.
A New Take on the Oldest Rookie
While The Rookie: Feds centered on Niecy Nash-Betts as the oldest rookie to enter the FBI Academy, The Rookie: North returns to the premise that launched the original series—but with a fresh setting. The show follows Alex Holland, a middle-aged man who becomes the oldest rookie cop, echoing the journey of Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan. This time, however, the story trades the urban landscape of Los Angeles for the rugged rural terrain of Washington state. Ellis’ character name nods to series creator Alexi Hawley and even subtly aligns with Nolan, maintaining thematic ties between the two leads.
Creative Team and Production
Alexi Hawley will write, direct, and executive produce the pilot. Nathan Fillion joins as an executive producer alongside Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, and Michelle Chapman. Ellis will also produce, adding to his growing behind-the-scenes résumé. The pilot is being developed in partnership with Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.
Franchise Momentum and the Series’ Future
Earlier this year, ABC renewed The Rookie for an eighth season, set to premiere on January 6, 2026. If The Rookie: North moves from pilot to full series, it will mark the second official spinoff of the franchise. ABC previously aired The Rookie: Feds, which ran for one season before its cancellation in 2023.
Ellis’ Expanding Career
Ellis remains a dynamic presence in Hollywood. Beyond Insecure, his film portfolio includes Top Gun: Maverick, Escape Room, Freaky Tales, and season two of Running Point. He also stars in Mindy Kaling’s upcoming series Not Suitable for Work and recently delivered a standout performance in Peacock’s thriller All Her Fault.
What’s Next
Deadline reports that Ellis is officially locked in as the lead for The Rookie: North, with ABC placing a pilot order as the next step toward a potential series pickup. For now, fans can look forward to The Rookie Season 8, premiering Tuesday, January 6 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
