James Pickens, Jr. Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis — and Shares He Is Now Cancer-Free

Grey’s Anatomy star James Pickens Jr. is opening up about a deeply personal health battle that reflects a storyline currently unfolding on the hit medical drama. The longtime actor revealed that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year — and has since undergone treatment that has left him cancer-free.

Pickens, 73, shared that the diagnosis came after elevated PSA levels were detected during a routine physical exam. Because prostate cancer runs heavily in his family — affecting his father and several uncles — he began screening early in life and remained vigilant.

Further testing, including an MRI and biopsy, confirmed a tumor that had fortunately not spread. Pickens underwent a robotic radical prostatectomy, a minimally invasive surgery that removed the cancer. Following the procedure, doctors confirmed that he is free of cancer, a message he has since shared publicly to encourage others to take screening seriously.

“We caught it really early,” Pickens explained, noting that early detection played a critical role in his positive outcome. “I’m grateful to be able to say I’m now cancer-free.”

The revelation comes as Grey’s Anatomy airs a storyline in which Pickens’ character, Dr. Richard Webber, also faces a cancer diagnosis. The real-life and onscreen parallels have made the experience even more profound for the actor, who has portrayed Webber since the series debuted in 2005.

Pickens said he hopes his transparency helps raise awareness — particularly among Black men, who statistically face a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. In recent public service messages, he has urged men to speak to their doctors about PSA testing, especially if they have a family history of the disease.

“Early detection works,” Pickens emphasized. “If you’re at higher risk or cancer runs in your family, have the conversation. Prostate cancer is highly treatable when caught early.”

With his diagnosis behind him and the support of fans and colleagues, Pickens is using his platform to advocate for regular screenings and to break down stigma surrounding men’s health. His message is one of hope — and a reminder that proactive care can save lives.
