The wait is finally over — Idris Elba is returning as disgraced detective John Luther in a brand-new Netflix sequel. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news, confirming that production is officially moving forward and filming is expected to begin in early 2026.
Elba — represented by WME, The Artists Partnership and Johnson Shapiro — will once again lead the cast as the hardened, morally conflicted detective who has captivated viewers since the BBC series launched in 2010.
Director Jamie Payne returns to helm the new project, with Luther creator Neil Cross once again writing the script. Payne is represented by UTA and Independent Talent Group, and Cross by UTA, Independent Talent Group and Felker Toczek.
A New Wave of Murders Hits London
The upcoming film follows a chilling storyline: a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders begins terrorizing London. Despite Luther’s complicated past and the fallout from his capture in The Fallen Sun, he is secretly called back into service — but this time, danger is coming from all directions.
According to Netflix, the core mystery centers on one haunting question:
“How can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”
For viewers who missed Alice Morgan’s presence in The Fallen Sun, the sequel promises a reunion between Luther and his most compelling adversary. Wilson’s Alice — a research doctor turned charming psychopath — played a major role across three seasons of the original series and remains one of the show’s most iconic characters.
Cast & Crew React
Director Jamie Payne shared his excitement about returning:
“Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Series creator Neil Cross added:
“Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family. I never stop wondering what’s become of them, and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
A Legacy Continues
The original Luther series ran for five seasons beginning in 2010. Netflix later expanded the franchise with Luther: The Fallen Sun, released in March 2023.
Elba has long expressed interest in continuing the character’s story, calling Luther his “legacy project” and hinting that the iconic coat has always been waiting for his return.
The new film will be produced by Chernin Entertainment alongside Neil Cross, with Elba also producing through his 22Summers banner with Gina Carter and Tim Lewis.
Release Date
There is no confirmed release date yet, but cameras are expected to start rolling in early 2026.
