Huey Williams, of the Jackson Southernaires, Passed Away at 86

Huey P. Williams, the legendary gospel singer and longtime lead vocalist of The Jackson Southernaires, passed away peacefully at his home in Smithdale, Mississippi. He transitioned on March 24, 2025, at the age of 86.

Doug Williams, who is Williams’ brother and singer of the Stellar award-winning group the Williams Brothers, shared the news on social media.

Huey’s Background and Accomplishments

Williams was a pillar of traditional gospel music, known for his soul-stirring vocals and dedication to spreading the gospel through song. Mr. Huey was the older brother of Frank Williams, founder of the Mississippi Mass Choir, and of Melvin, Doug, and Leonard Williams, members of the renowned The Williams Brothers. He and Frank were also the longtime lead vocalists of The Jackson Southernaires.

In 1992, The Jackson Southernaires received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Gospel Album for Thank You Mama for Praying for Me. Williams also performed with his brothers in The Williams Brothers, further cementing his family’s legacy in gospel music.

When Huey was asked about retiring, he said, “My answer to that question is, how do you give up on God? How do you give up on Gospel? How do you say, ‘I’m going to retire?’ It’s like a good marriage, until death do us part.” And Huey was faithful to the end.

A musical tribute in his honor was held in McComb, Mississippi, on March 28. His viewing took place on March 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service.

Williams leaves behind a rich catalog of gospel classics, including “He Keeps On Blessing Me,” “Lord Remember Me,” “Lead Me,” “Don’t Look Down On A Man,” “Heavy Load,” “Teddy Bear,” and “I Need You to Hold My Hand.” His impact on gospel music will be remembered for generations to come.

Williams’ passing is truly a heartbreaking loss for the gospel music community.
