‘Good Times’ Actor Johnny Brown Has Passed Away
Johnny Brown, who was mostly known for his role as Nathan Bookman on the hit 70s show Good Times, has passed away. He was 84-years old.
His daughter Sharon Catherine Brown shared on social media that the actor, comedian, and singer died on Wednesday.
Sharon, who is also a Broadway actress, stated “Our family is devastated. Devastated. Devastated. Beyond heartbroken. Barely able to breathe. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time because we need a minute to process the unthinkable. To articulate the depths of profound sadness.”
She continued, “This is my mom’s husband for sixty one years, mine and JJ’s dad, Elijah and Levi’s Pop Pop, older brother to George and brother in law to Pat and extended family to Chris, Hihat, Damian and Derell. It’s too terrible. It will never not be. It’s a shock. He was literally snatched out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet. So there will be more to say but not now. Dad was the absolute best. We love him so very much.”
One of his co-stars Bern Nadette Stanis, who played Thelma on the show, offered her condolences on Instagram.
“I am devastated to hear about my dear friend Johnny Brown who played Bookmen on our show Good Times. I will miss all the stories about SammyDavis Jr. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and even John Wayne. His talent was beyond measure…. He was such a pleasure to work with. I certainly will miss his happy spirit and big smile.
She added, “Praying for his family in every way. RIP my wonderful friend I will truly miss you.❤️🙏🏽❤️.”
Brown, a native of St. Petersburg, Florida, made his film debut in the 1966 film A Man Called Adam and also appeared in the hit The Out of Towners in 1969.
After guest spots on shows like Maude (1973) and The Rookies (1973), he was cast as the building’s handyman Nathan Bookman on Good Times, appearing on 58 episodes from 1975-1979.
He can also be seen in the 1978 film version of The Wiz.
Brown continued his TV career guest-starring in shows such as The Jeffersons, Moonlighting, Martin, Family Matters, and Everybody Hates Chris.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, his two children, his brother, and extended family.
Sending condolences to his entire family.
