NY Daily News Reports:
A family fight over a WiFi password turned deadly last year and now an 18-year-old will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Kevon Watkins was sentenced to life in prison Friday after he was found guilty of strangling his 20-year-old sister in their central Georgia home.
The dispute began after Watkins changed the WiFi password so he could play video games without his family slowing down the internet connection, according to a statement by the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
As Watkins was arguing with his mother, his sister feared he was about to assault the woman and came to help, authorities said. The two siblings tussled and fell on the floor until Watkins placed his sister in a choke hold and held her in that position for about 15, minutes, according to the attorney’s office.
Their mother called 911, but Alexus Breanna Watkins was pronounced dead at a hospital that night. The crime happened on Feb. 2, 2018, in the city of Macon, south of Atlanta.
“This act of violence resulted in an unspeakable tragedy for this family,” District Attorney David Cooke said in the statement. “I hope this verdict and sentence closes the door on this chapter of their lives and that they will be able to begin to heal.”
Kevon Watkins waived his right to a jury trial and chose to have a Bibb County judge decide his fate. He was found guilty of felony murder.
The trial lasted two days and included testimony from a deputy who said the teen was still holding his sister in a chokehold when police arrived.
This is so sad to hear that her own brother took her precious life away. Let us please keep their family in our prayers as they go through this difficult time. And now you’re officially in the KNOW!
