May 28, 2025 – Compton, CA – In a monumental step for education in Compton, Dr. Dre, the legendary music producer and entrepreneur, has unveiled a new $200 million campus for Compton High School. The grand opening ceremony, held last week, was a testament to Dre’s commitment to giving back to his community and providing students with the resources he wished he had during his youth.
A Vision Realized
Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, has long been an advocate for educational reform, particularly in underserved communities. At the groundbreaking ceremony in 2022, Dre shared his personal experiences, stating, “I was an artistic kid in school with no outlet for it. I knew I had something special to offer to the world, but with nothing to support my gift, schools left me feeling unseen.”
To address this gap, Dre donated $10 million to fund the school’s new performing arts center, which now bears his name: the “Andre ‘Dr. Dre’ Young Performing Arts Center.” The center features a 900-seat theater and a digital media production suite, providing students with state-of-the-art facilities to nurture their creative talents.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The new campus is designed to accommodate up to 1,800 students, with potential for future expansion. It boasts a modern academic building, a gymnasium, an aquatics center, a football stadium, and a track. These facilities aim to provide students with a comprehensive education that extends beyond the classroom.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Dr. Dre’s investment in Compton High School is part of a broader initiative to support education in Los Angeles. In addition to his contributions to Compton High, Dre and fellow music mogul Jimmy Iovine have partnered to open the Iovine and Young Center in South L.A., a high school focused on interdisciplinary learning and entrepreneurial talent.
Through these efforts, Dr. Dre continues to leverage his success to create opportunities for the next generation, ensuring that students in Compton and beyond have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
