Concord Christmas Tree Lighting Turns Chaotic After Shooting

CONCORD, N.C. — A festive evening of lights and holiday cheer turned into chaos Friday night when gunshots rang out during Concord’s 28th annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, wounding four people and abruptly ending the celebration.

Authorities say the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. along Union Street South near the intersection with Corban Avenue, just as the downtown crowd was gathered for the event.

Emergency responders from Concord Police, Fire, and Cabarrus County EMS—already on the scene for the event—rushed in to provide aid, evacuate the area, and transport the injured to local hospitals.

Victims and Investigators Respond

Of the four people shot, three remain in critical condition, while a fourth is listed as stable, according to Concord Police. Investigators have made it clear that this was not a random act of violence: the shooting appears to have been between two individuals who knew each other.

Authorities have identified three suspects in the case. One is 18-year-old Nasir Ahmad Bostic, who is among the wounded and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police have issued warrants for his arrest on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, and inciting a riot.

The second suspected shooter is a juvenile who also sustained injuries; petitions have been filed against them on similar serious charges, including two counts related to discharging a weapon into an occupied property. A third suspect, 17-year-old Keyvyonn Rayshaund Bostic, has been arrested and faces charges of accessory after the fact and inciting a riot.

Community Shock and Response

Witnesses say panic erupted after the shots, with many attendees fleeing as emergency vehicles flooded the area. The sudden violence disrupted what was meant to be a joyful, family-friendly gathering—with Santa and Mrs. Claus, food trucks, a screening of The Grinch, fireworks, and more.

In the aftermath, Concord’s mayor and officials expressed both sorrow and resolve. Mayor Bill Dusch announced that despite the tragedy, the city’s 97th Christmas Parade and a Santa Scramble 5K would continue as planned, with increased security measures in place. “We are a resilient community,” he said, adding that while some families might choose not to attend, he understands and respects their decision.

Concord Police Chief Jimmy Hughes praised the swift cooperation of downtown businesses, first responders, and the public, saying their actions helped evacuate people safely, limited further harm, and aided in identifying the suspects.

Investigation Underway

The investigation remains active as police review video footage from the event and interview witnesses. Authorities are urging anyone who captured photos or videos during the tree lighting to submit them to assist in their work.

Officials emphasize that they are not looking for additional suspects at this time, but they continue to appeal to the public for help as they piece together what led to a night of celebration turning into a scene of violence.
