Community Mourns Victims of Kappa Picnic Shooting

Tragedy struck Atlanta’s Coan Park on Saturday evening during a Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity picnic, leaving two men dead and others shaken. The incident began when an uninvited guest arrived at the event and engaged in a heated confrontation that quickly escalated into violence.

The first victim, Anthony Lewis Pearson, 33, was a fraternity member and beloved community figure. He was shot in the head and died at the scene around 8 p.m. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner later confirmed the other fatality as Justin Minnitee, 23, who was critically wounded during the shootout and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Pearson, an initiate of the Gamma Chi chapter at Savannah State University, was widely recognized as a devoted father, brother, mentor, and fraternity leader. “He was going to make you feel like family. Everybody was family to him. His aura is unmatched,” his sister told FOX 5, remembering his selflessness after their father’s death.

A statement from the Gamma Chi chapter on Instagram echoed the sentiment, honoring him as “a beloved father, son, brother, family member and friend… remembered for an energy and light that charged the hearts and spirits of all who encountered him.”

According to police, the altercation began when Minnitee—who did not have permission to attend the picnic—arrived uninvited and confronted attendees. Guns were drawn during an attempted de-escalation, leading to a mutual exchange of gunfire. Authorities report two additional individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and sought treatment themselves.

The investigation remains active, and the Atlanta Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward. Community members and fraternity brothers are planning vigils and memorials to honor Pearson’s legacy. The Gamma Chi chapter has asked well-wishers to contribute to the “Anthony Pearson Legacy Fund,” established in support of his young daughter, Avery  .
