A promising college track star was fatally stabbed early Monday in a violent off-campus incident that has shocked classmates, coaches, and community members.
Kevaughn Goldson, 23, a senior sprinter on the Lincoln University men’s track and field team, died from multiple stab wounds after an altercation with his girlfriend, who has been charged in connection with his death, authorities said.
Goldson, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, was found with serious chest and back injuries at a residence near the Missouri school at about 1:09 a.m. by Jefferson City police officers responding to a 911 call. He was airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia, where he later died, investigators confirmed.
Accused Victim and Suspect Both Student-Athletes
Denita Jackson, 27, a senior sprinter on the Lincoln University women’s track and field team and Goldson’s girlfriend, was taken into custody at the scene and faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. She remains held without bond in the Cole County Jail, prosecutors said.
Police and court records detail that Jackson told investigators she had returned home early from work after feeling unwell, only to hear voices from her roommate’s locked bedroom. Jackson said she used a hair clip to open the door and saw Goldson and the roommate inside.
A physical confrontation ensued, according to Jackson’s account, during which she claims Goldson kicked and then began choking her. Jackson said she then grabbed a knife from under the bed and stabbed him. She called 911 shortly afterward.
Officials have not confirmed whether any formal self-defense claim will be part of Jackson’s legal strategy, and it was unclear Wednesday if she had entered a plea or retained an attorney.
Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Lincoln University issued condolences to Goldson’s family and friends, describing the incident as a “tragic situation” and offering support services to students. The university did not comment on disciplinary actions regarding Jackson.
Fellow students and community members expressed sorrow online, remembering Goldson as a dedicated athlete and friend. Plans for memorials or tributes had not been announced as of Wednesday.
Local law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter, including interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence as the case moves through the court system.
