Today we mourn the loss of a remarkable voice and true pioneer in the world of R&B and funk. Cavin Yarbrough, who was a vocalist, musician, and producer best known as one-half of the hit-making duo Yarbrough & Peoples, has passed away at the age of 71. His death was confirmed by his wife and longtime music partner, Alisa Peoples, to LATF USA.
“He was the love of my life, my protector. Now he’s my guardian angel,” Peoples shared in a heartfelt statement.
Yarbrough co-founded Yarbrough & Peoples, the Dallas-based duo that rose to fame with their 1981 Billboard R&B #1 smash, “Don’t Stop the Music.” Their infectious groove and unmistakable sound helped define the R&B and funk scene of the 1980s.
Their longtime friend and representative, Michele Elyzabeth, reflected on Cavin’s legacy: “Cavin was not only an extraordinary talent but a kind man with a great heart. His legacy will live on in the music, in our memories, and in the hearts of everyone who knew him.”
Yarbrough & Peoples were discovered by Lonnie Simmons, the acclaimed producer behind The Gap Band. Impressed by their talent, Simmons signed them to his label, Total Experience Records, where they quickly found success alongside other funk and R&B acts of the era.
The Gap Band, formed by brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson, shared deep musical ties with Yarbrough & Peoples through their Dallas roots and Simmons’ production. Together, these acts helped shape the sound of 1980s funk and R&B.
Throughout the decade, Yarbrough & Peoples delivered a string of R&B hits, including:
• “Heartbeats” (R&B No. 10, 1983)
• “Don’t Waste Your Time” (R&B No. 1, Pop No. 48, 1984)
• “Guilty” (R&B No. 2, 1986)
• “I Wouldn’t Lie” (R&B No. 6, 1986)
Sending condolences to Alisa Peoples and the rest of their family.
