B.B. King Biopic Projects in the Works: Estate-Backed Film and Docudrama on the Horizon

The life and legacy of blues legend B.B. King is heading to the big screen — with multiple projects currently in development, each aiming to capture different aspects of the iconic musician’s story.

Two Projects, Two Visions

The first project, titled “The Thrill Is On,” stars acclaimed actor Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Treme) as B.B. King. Initially announced as B.B. King and I, this film is described as a dramatized story inspired by King’s friendship with musician Michael Zanetis, who also co-wrote and produced the film. Pierce clarified that the film is not a traditional biopic, but rather a stylized interpretation of a real-life relationship.

While the movie is not officially backed by King’s estate, it has not faced opposition. Still, the estate has emphasized that this production should not be considered the definitive biopic.

The Official Estate-Backed Biopic

Separately, the B.B. King Estate, led by chairman Vassal Benford, is developing an authorized biopic. This project promises to chronicle King’s extraordinary journey — from his humble beginnings in Mississippi to his rise as the “King of the Blues” and a global music icon.

The estate-backed film entered pre-production in 2021, but a lead actor has yet to be announced. Early reports indicate that casting discussions have included several notable names, though no official confirmation has been made.

Rumors of a Third Project

Adding to the excitement, a recent report suggests a new B.B. King biopic is being targeted for a 2026 release. This rumored version is said to feature original music contributions from contemporary artists, including Aloe Blacc and Quavo, and will be produced under the guidance of Vassal Benford. These details remain unconfirmed by major Hollywood studios and should be considered speculative for now.

A Legacy Worth Retelling

Born Riley B. King in 1925, B.B. King became one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, shaping the sound of modern blues and inspiring countless artists across genres. His signature guitar style, heartfelt vocals, and enduring classics — including the Grammy-winning “The Thrill Is Gone” — cemented his place as a cultural icon.

The competing projects underscore both the power of King’s story and the challenge of capturing his essence on film. Whether through an intimate friendship narrative or a sweeping authorized biopic, audiences can expect to see the legend’s story reach a new generation.
