Alice Tan Ridley, AGT Singer and Gabby Sidibe’s Mom, Passed Away at 72

Alice Tan Ridley, a celebrated singer and the mother of actress Gabourey Sidibe, passed away on March 25, 2025, at the age of 72. Her loved ones confirmed her passing, including the “Precious” actress, 41, in an obituary published by Sconiers Funeral Home in Columbus, Ga.  

A cause of death hasn’t been revealed.

Her death marked the end of a remarkable life filled with music, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family.

A Journey from Teaching to Singing

Born on December 21, 1952, in Georgia, Alice Tan Ridley began her career as a special education teacher in Brooklyn, New York. However, her passion for music led her to transition from teaching to singing, captivating audiences with her powerful voice. For over 30 years, she was a beloved figure in the New York City subway system, particularly at Herald Square, where her performances became a cherished part of daily commutes.

Rise to National Recognition

Alice’s talent extended beyond the subway platforms. She gained national attention in 2010 as a semi-finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” delivering memorable performances of songs like “At Last.” Her appearances on shows such as “Showtime at the Apollo” and “30 Seconds to Fame” further cemented her status as a remarkable vocalist. In 2007, she won an Emmy for her contribution to the documentary “Military Families.”

A Life Rich in Family and Legacy

Born in Charles Junction, Georgia, Alice was the seventh of eight siblings. She married Ibnou Sidibe in 1980, and together they had two children: Gabourey and Ahmed Sidibe. After their divorce, Alice continued to support her family through her music, performing in various venues, including Harlem’s Cotton Club, and later, the subway stations of New York City.

Alice’s debut album, “Never Lost My Way,” released in 2016, showcased her enduring passion for music. She continued to perform until 2018, when she retired due to a dementia diagnosis.
