A heartbreaking tragedy in Cobb County, Georgia, has left a family grieving after 31-year-old Abria Spriggs and her 2-year-old daughter were found dead inside a vehicle parked near a church where they had reportedly been staying while facing housing challenges.
Authorities discovered the mother and toddler on Sunday morning, October 25, near Milford Baptist Church on Milford Church Road. Both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced beyond lifesaving measures when first responders arrived, according to local reports.
Investigators believe the shooting occurred inside the vehicle. Although the case has been described as a suspected murder-suicide in media reports, the Cobb County Police Department has said the investigation remains ongoing.
Mother and Daughter Found Near Church
Police responded to the area shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report about a woman who appeared to be deceased inside a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Spriggs and her young daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities said both were beyond lifesaving measures.
According to reports, investigators believe Spriggs shot her daughter before taking her own life. Police have indicated that they do not believe another person was involved in the shooting.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Family Says Mother Was Facing Personal Struggles
According to the New York Post, Spriggs had recently relocated from Augusta to the Atlanta area and was experiencing housing instability with her daughter.
Her great-uncle, James Kennedy, told the publication that relatives were unaware of the full extent of the family’s circumstances. He also said Spriggs had previously spoken about wanting to end her life, but the family did not realize how serious her distress had become.
Kennedy expressed regret that he had not known the extent of what she was experiencing, saying he would have tried to help if he had understood the situation.
The family’s account highlights the difficulties loved ones can face when someone is struggling privately and those around them do not recognize the severity of the situation.
Community Members Remember the Young Child
The deaths have also shaken people connected to a transitional outreach program associated with the church.
Jessica Veasley, who said she had recently met Spriggs through a program supporting single mothers, described the loss as devastating. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Spriggs had been working two jobs while trying to secure housing and childcare.
Veasley recalled the young girl fondly and urged people to check on those around them, recognizing that individuals may be facing overwhelming challenges without openly sharing what they are going through.
The circumstances have left community members mourning the toddler while reflecting on the importance of access to stable housing, emotional support and resources for struggling families.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Cobb County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the deaths. Authorities have not released all details surrounding the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The tragedy is a painful reminder that families experiencing homelessness or emotional distress may need support that extends beyond immediate shelter and financial assistance.
