A 47-year-old New York State Thruway maintenance worker and father of two has died after being struck by a vehicle while working along Interstate 287 in White Plains, New York.
Jamil B. Wilson, a lifelong White Plains resident, was performing mowing operations on the Cross Westchester Expressway on Monday, October 19, 2026, when the fatal crash occurred, according to the New York State Thruway Authority. Wilson had worked for the agency for nearly six years.
The incident happened on westbound I-287 near Exit 6 for Broadway, also known as Route 22. Wilson was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Police Provide Details of the Fatal Crash
According to New York State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 2:17 p.m. as a 2026 Nissan traveled westbound on I-287.
Investigators said the Nissan veered onto the shoulder before reentering the roadway and striking the rear of a 2025 Mazda. The Nissan then left the roadway again and traveled onto the grassy shoulder, where it struck Wilson as he operated a mowing tractor.
The Nissan’s driver sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and a passenger in the Mazda were also transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Other members of Wilson’s maintenance crew were not injured in the incident.
State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No arrests or citations had been announced in the reports reviewed.
Remembering a Devoted Father and Dedicated Employee

Wilson leaves behind his longtime partner, Taidra Brabham, and their two children, Jeremiah, 13, and Jaila, 12.
His death has devastated a family that had shared a life together for decades. Brabham and Wilson had been together since they were 16, according to an interview with News 12 Westchester.
Brabham described Wilson as a loving partner and father who worked hard for his family. She also shared that cutting grass was something he was passionate about.
Friends and community members have also remembered Wilson for his friendly personality, warm smile and willingness to make others laugh.

New York State Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare said Wilson was a devoted father who loved talking about his children. He also described him as someone who got along with everyone and was consistently among the first to arrive at work.
In a statement following Wilson’s death, the authority expressed its grief and offered condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.
“Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road,” the agency emphasized, recognizing Wilson’s dedication and commitment to his work.
Community Rallies Around Wilson’s Family
Following the tragedy, a fundraiser was established to help Brabham and the children navigate the difficult days ahead.
The GoFundMe campaign is intended to assist with funeral expenses, everyday living costs and the future needs of Wilson’s children. The effort has drawn support from members of the White Plains community who want to help the family during this heartbreaking time.
Brabham has also urged drivers to remain alert and exercise caution around people working on roadways, emphasizing that every roadside worker has loved ones waiting for them at home.
A Reminder to Protect Roadside Workers
Wilson’s death highlights the dangers faced by highway maintenance crews and other workers who perform essential jobs close to moving traffic.
New York’s Move Over Law requires motorists to exercise due care when approaching certain stopped emergency, hazard, construction and maintenance vehicles. Drivers should slow down and move over when it is safe and legally required to help protect workers and other people on the roadside.
As Wilson’s family, friends and colleagues mourn his passing, he is being remembered not only for his years of service but also for the love he gave his children and the lasting impression he made on his community.
Y’all Know What sends heartfelt condolences to Jamil Wilson’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find strength, comfort and support as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.
