Authorities in Indianapolis are investigating the deaths of 33-year-old Shatayvia Alisha Calderon and her 9-year-old son, Julian Calderon, who were found dead with gunshot wounds inside their apartment Monday afternoon.
According to reports from the New York Post and other news outlets, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a reported shooting shortly after 1 p.m. on October 19 at an apartment complex on the city’s northwest side.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers found Shatayvia and Julian unresponsive. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the deaths may be the result of a murder-suicide, with police indicating that the mother allegedly shot her son before taking her own life. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Police Investigating the Circumstances
Authorities recovered a firearm inside the apartment and spoke with a witness who is cooperating with investigators. Officials have not publicly established what led to the shooting or identified a confirmed motive.
IMPD spokesperson Officer Drew Brown described the incident as “unthinkable,” emphasizing that investigators are working to determine what happened while also providing support and resources to those affected by the tragedy.
Police have stated that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community related to the incident.
