Janelle James is bringing her signature humor to Netflix! The Emmy-nominated actress and comedian has announced her first hour-long stand-up comedy special, How Romantic, which is set to premiere globally on November 10, 2026.
Best known for her hilarious portrayal of Principal Ava Coleman on ABC’s hit comedy series Abbott Elementary, James is preparing to give audiences an unfiltered look at her comedic perspective on relationships, money and the complicated dynamics between men and women.
According to the special’s official description, Janelle James: How Romantic will tackle topics ranging from body counts and bank accounts to why women should wrestle men. The special promises to showcase the bold observations and distinctive comedic style that have helped make James a fan favorite.
From Stand-Up Comedy to Television Stardom
Although many viewers recognize James as the outspoken and unconventional Principal Coleman, her career in comedy began long before her breakout television role.
James started performing stand-up in the late 2000s and spent years touring and developing her craft. She has also performed alongside acclaimed comedian Chris Rock and released her debut comedy album, Black and Mild, in 2017.
Her relationship with Netflix audiences is not entirely new. James previously appeared in the streaming platform’s comedy collections The Comedy Lineup and The Standups. However, How Romantic marks a significant milestone as her first full-length, hour-long stand-up special for the platform.
James wrote and performed the special and also serves as its executive producer. Matt Schuler is the producer, while Marcus Russell Price directs the project.
