4 Young Sisters Killed in Overnight House Fire in Chadbourn, NC

CHADBOURN, N.C. — A devastating overnight house fire in Chadbourn, Columbus County, has claimed the lives of four young sisters, ages 2, 4, 6, and 7.

The blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames, leaving no chance to rescue the children trapped inside. Six children were in the home without adult supervision when the fire started. Two 11-year-olds managed to escape without injury, including one—identified as Winter Green—who ran for help.

The victims were identified as Kalani Rae, Kendall Xaiya, Josephina Renee, and Sophia Nachelle Melvin. Family members remembered each child for her vibrant personality: Kalani loved sunsets, Kendall adored rainbows, Josie never turned down pizza, and Sophia enjoyed watching Bluey.

Their father, Patrick Ellis, called the loss “unimaginable” and expressed gratitude for the community’s compassion.

“I want to sincerely thank the people of Chadbourn and the surrounding communities for the incredible love, prayers, and support you have shown my family during this devastating time,” Ellis said in a statement. “Kalani, Kendall, Josie, and Sophie were bright lights who brought joy to everyone around them. Their laughter filled every space with warmth.”

The family also clarified that no official fundraisers have been authorized at this time.

Funeral services for the sisters are scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

State investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
