The Hampton, Virginia, community is mourning the tragic death of 2-year-old Chozen Gray, who was fatally shot Wednesday night on LaSalle Avenue.
According to the Hampton Police Department, officers responded to the 600 block of LaSalle Avenue after a shooting was reported. Chozen was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Police have not publicly released details about what led to the shooting or identified a suspect.
Community Comes Together for Chozen
In the days following Chozen’s death, community members gathered at the location where the little boy was shot to remember his life and support his family.
Community activist Christopher Moore organized a gathering Sunday to bring people together and provide resources and support to Chozen’s loved ones. Moore said he wanted the community to stand with the family during what he described as an extremely difficult time.
Chozen’s aunt also spoke briefly to those gathered, asking the community for continued prayers and love for the family. She said the family was still trying to obtain information about what happened.
Investigators have said they are not currently looking for any suspects in connection with the shooting. A man who was at the scene Wednesday night previously told WTKR that the shooting was an accident. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the circumstances surrounding that claim.
The loss of such a young child has left members of the Hampton community grieving and questioning how a tragedy involving a 2-year-old could occur.
Family Seeking Help With Funeral Expenses
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Chozen’s family cover funeral and memorial expenses.
The fundraiser describes Chozen as a “precious and joyful 2-year-old boy” whose smile and personality brought happiness to those around him. As of September 28, the campaign had raised more than $4,500 toward its $12,000 goal.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of Chozen’s death.
