The music world is mourning the loss of Manuel “Lonnie” Seal Jr., the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer and arranger who helped shape the sound of 1990s and 2000s R&B.
Seal, who was 66, was known for his longtime creative partnership with Jermaine Dupri and his work with So So Def Recordings, where the two helped create a distinctive sound that defined a generation of R&B and hip-hop.
News of Seal’s death was shared by Dupri on Sunday, September 27. In an emotional tribute, Dupri credited Seal as the first person who truly understood him musically and described him as a key figure in the creation of the So So Def sound.
A Creative Force Behind Major R&B Hits
Seal’s résumé includes songwriting and production credits with some of the biggest names in music, including Mariah Carey, Usher, TLC, Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Destiny’s Child.
One of his most recognizable achievements came through his collaboration with Mariah Carey and Jermaine Dupri on the Grammy-winning 2005 hit “We Belong Together.” The song became one of Carey’s signature recordings and remains one of the defining R&B hits of its era.
Seal’s connection to So So Def stretched back to the label’s formative years. He co-wrote Xscape’s “Just Kickin’ It,” one of the group’s breakthrough hits, and worked alongside Dupri on projects for artists associated with the label.
His production credits also included work with Da Brat, whose 1994 album Funkdafied was produced by Dupri and Seal. Contemporary music coverage specifically credited the pair as producers on the project.
Seal continued collaborating with Dupri and other major artists throughout the 2000s. His credits included work on projects by Jagged Edge, Usher and Ashanti, among others.
A Lasting Musical Partnership
The relationship between Seal and Dupri went beyond the traditional producer-songwriter collaboration. Together, they developed a musical chemistry that became closely associated with So So Def.
Following news of Seal’s passing, Dupri’s tribute highlighted just how important that creative partnership was to his career and the development of the label’s sound.
For fans of 1990s and 2000s R&B, Seal’s influence can be heard across countless records from an era defined by memorable melodies, layered harmonies, soulful vocals and hip-hop-infused production.
