The estate of late singer and actress Irene Cara has reportedly uncovered more than $333,000 in music royalties that the legendary entertainer earned before her death.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Cara’s business manager discovered $333,353 in previously uncollected royalties and has since recovered the funds for her estate. The money was reportedly held by several music companies.
The filing lists approximately $246,000 held with Chappell Music, $78,000 at Phonographic Performance Limited and $8,000 at Unidisc Musique.
The estate is also seeking to clarify compensation for Cara’s business manager, who reportedly had a verbal agreement with the singer entitling the manager to 15% of the recovered $333,353.
Cara’s business manager is continuing to work on matters involving the singer’s musical legacy, including exploring a potential buyer for her music rights, negotiating future uses of her recordings and reviewing royalty offers.
Irene Cara became a household name through her work in two iconic 1980s films. She starred as Coco Hernandez in “Fame” and performed the film’s Academy Award-winning title song. She later reached another career milestone with “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” the title song from the 1983 film Flashdance, which earned her another Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Cara died in 2022 at the age of 63. Her official cause of death was reported as hypertension and high cholesterol.
The discovery of the uncollected royalties comes as her estate continues working to preserve and manage the singer’s musical legacy more than three years after her passing.
