Fans were left stunned Thursday night after the highly anticipated Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie concert at San Francisco’s Chase Center was abruptly postponed just minutes before showtime due to a medical emergency involving a member of the legendary band.
In a statement shared on social media, Earth, Wind & Fire announced they would be unable to perform as scheduled.
“We are unable to perform as scheduled tonight at Chase Center in San Francisco due to a medical emergency involving a member of our band. As a result, tonight’s show with Lionel Richie will be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced soon,” the group said.
The band also apologized to fans, adding, “We sincerely apologize for the unexpected change and appreciate everyone’s understanding.”
Neither the band nor representatives for the tour identified the member involved or disclosed the nature of the medical emergency. Chase Center confirmed that all tickets purchased for the Aug. 6 performance will be honored on the rescheduled date, while refunds are available through the original point of purchase.
The postponement comes during the duo’s Sing A Song All Night Long Tour, which marks the third consecutive year Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie have toured together. The tour is currently scheduled to continue with upcoming performances in Palm Desert, California, before making additional stops across the country.
Ironically, the latest setback follows Richie’s own health scare earlier this summer. In June, the music icon was forced to cut a concert short after experiencing dizziness onstage in Minnesota. Doctors advised him to rest, leading to the postponement of two tour dates before he returned to the stage a few days later.
As fans await updates on the condition of the unidentified band member, many have taken to social media to send prayers and well wishes to the legendary group.
At this time, no additional information has been released regarding the medical emergency or whether it will impact future tour dates.
