Authorities have identified the gunman responsible for the deadly mass shooting at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, that claimed three lives and injured seven others.
During a Sunday news conference, police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Chad Williams, who investigators say died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after opening fire at the restaurant on Saturday afternoon. Authorities believe Williams acted alone, and there is currently no indication that anyone else was involved.
The shooting unfolded at the recently opened In-N-Out location, sending customers and employees scrambling for safety as gunfire erupted. Among those killed was an In-N-Out employee, while several others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from stable to critical condition. Officials said two of the injured have since been released from the hospital.
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks praised the actions of an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian, saying both returned fire at the suspect. Authorities believe their quick response likely prevented even more lives from being lost.
The FBI, along with local and federal law enforcement agencies, continues to investigate the shooting. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or captured photos or videos to contact investigators. Police also urged the public not to spread misinformation or falsely identify individuals as being connected to the attack.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. Investigators say they are working closely with the suspect’s family as they continue to piece together what led to the tragic attack.
The tragedy has shaken the Twin Falls community, as the restaurant had been open for only a little over a week before the shooting occurred. Community members continue to mourn the victims while authorities work to provide answers.
