LOS ANGELES — Grammy-nominated singer Amerie has confirmed she and her husband, Lenny Nicholson, are ending their marriage after more than a decade together.
The R&B star, best known for her 2005 hit “1 Thing,” opened up about the split during a recent interview on Way Up with Angela Yee while attending events for BET Awards weekend. Amerie, 45, revealed that she and Nicholson have been separated since 2023 and are now in the process of finalizing their divorce.
“Sometimes it just comes up,” she said candidly, explaining that she first spoke about the separation during an appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast. The singer, who has long kept her private life out of the spotlight, shared that the decision to part ways has been in motion for some time.
Amerie and Nicholson, who was also her manager, began dating in 2007 and tied the knot in a romantic oceanfront ceremony in Anguilla in 2011. They welcomed their son, River Rowe Charles, in 2018.
Reflecting on her relationship, Amerie spoke about the lessons she’s learned, saying, “All the relationships that we have, I believe we have them because we’re supposed to learn something… everything is a lesson to help you grow.” She also emphasized the importance of being with someone who “amplifies your light.”
Despite this personal change, Amerie remains focused on her music career. She recently released a new single titled “Mine” in March and has hinted that a new album is on the way later this year.
The singer’s revelation comes at a time when many longtime celebrity couples have announced breakups, but Amerie stressed that her separation from Nicholson has been amicable and largely kept private until now.
