Baylor Freshman Alex Foster Killed in Greenville Shooting

We are deeply saddened to share the devastating news that Alex Foster, a freshman defensive lineman at Baylor University and former standout at St. Joseph Catholic School in Greenville, Mississippi, has tragically passed away after being shot in his hometown.

Foster was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car, the Washington County coroner’s office confirmed to The Associated Press. He was 18.

Details of the shooting remain under investigation, but Foster’s death follows a troubling string of recent gun violence incidents in Greenville — the most recent being the tragic killing of 16-year-old O’Bannon High School student, Cody Boettcher, on Sunday night.

According to Baylor University, Foster was a 6-foot-5, 280-pound four-star recruit, ranked as the top football prospect in Mississippi and the No. 152 overall recruit in the nation. Known for his strength on the field and leadership off it, he had a bright future ahead.

In a joint statement, Baylor Vice President and Director of Athletics Mack B. Rhoades IV and Head Coach Dave Aranda said:

“We are devastated by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a cherished member of the Baylor football program and a freshman from Greenville, Miss. Alex tragically passed away in the early morning hours in his home state.”

The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of East Alexander Street, near North Colorado Street. Greenville police responded to the call early Tuesday morning and discovered Foster with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Delta Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Alex Foster’s family, his teammates, coaches, and the entire Baylor and Greenville communities during this incredibly difficult time.
