The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of pioneering rapper Sparky D, born Doreen Broadnax, who has died at the age of 61, according to reports and tributes shared by family members and fellow artists.
A trailblazer for women in hip-hop, Sparky D rose to prominence during the legendary Roxanne Wars of the mid-1980s, one of rap’s earliest and most influential battle rap movements. Her 1985 diss record, “Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne You’re Through),” established her as one of the fiercest female MCs of her era and helped pave the way for generations of women in hip-hop.
Following news of her passing, tributes poured in from some of hip-hop’s most respected pioneers.
Legendary producer DJ Premier reflected on Sparky D’s impact, remembering her as one of the first female battle rappers to represent Brownsville, Brooklyn. He praised her commanding voice, fearless delivery and lasting influence, noting that he had been a fan since her legendary battles with Roxanne Shanté. Premier also expressed gratitude that he and Nas were able to honor her on their recent collaboration, “BOUQUET.”
Hip-hop pioneer MC Sha-Rock also paid tribute, calling Sparky D’s passing “a tremendous loss” for the culture and encouraging the hip-hop community to cherish one another while honoring her legacy.
Although Sparky D’s early success made her one of rap’s pioneering female voices, she later spoke openly about the challenges she faced after her career slowed. In interviews, she revealed that many opportunities disappeared, making it difficult to secure performances and employment. She also candidly discussed overcoming addiction and dedicating her life to God, later embracing gospel music.
