5-Year-Old Girl Swept Into Ocean Identified After Body Recovered in Laguna Beach

A heartbreaking search for a missing 5-year-old girl came to a tragic end Thursday after authorities recovered her body off the coast of Laguna Beach, California.

The child, identified by her father as Amada Mia Brown, was swept into the ocean Tuesday evening after a powerful wave struck her family near Treasure Island Beach during dangerous surf conditions.

According to officials, Amada was walking near the shoreline with her mother and brother around 7:30 p.m. when strong waves and hazardous currents pulled all three into the water. Witnesses immediately rushed to help and were able to rescue the mother and Amada’s brother, but the young girl disappeared beneath the surf.

An extensive multi-agency search began shortly afterward, involving Laguna Beach Marine Safety, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Crews searched more than 90 square miles of ocean over a period of more than 30 hours while battling rough seas, powerful currents, and poor underwater visibility.

On Thursday morning, an aerial search team located a body approximately 250 to 300 yards offshore near Christmas Cove, about a quarter-mile north of where Amada was initially swept away. Authorities later confirmed the body was that of the missing child.

In a statement, Laguna Beach officials expressed their condolences to the family. Mayor Mark Orgill called the tragedy “one of the most heartbreaking incidents” he has witnessed during his time serving the community.

The incident occurred amid dangerous ocean conditions along the Southern California coastline. The National Weather Service had issued warnings about elevated surf, strong rip currents, and hazardous waves, with some swells reaching up to 10 feet. Officials continue to urge beachgoers to exercise caution and heed all safety advisories before entering the water.

As the community mourns the loss of Amada Mia Brown, many are remembering a young life taken far too soon and offering prayers and support to her grieving family during this unimaginable time.
