The NBA community is mourning the shocking death of Brandon Clarke, the beloved Memphis Grizzlies forward who died Monday at the age of 29.
The Grizzlies confirmed Clarke’s passing in a heartbreaking statement Tuesday, calling him “the gentlest soul” and praising the impact he made both on and off the court during his seven seasons with the franchise.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Clarke rose to basketball prominence after standout college careers at San Jose State University and Gonzaga University. He was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to Memphis on draft night. Clarke quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his energy, athleticism, and relentless hustle, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in his debut season.
Over 309 NBA games, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and became an important part of Memphis’ young core. However, injuries plagued the latter years of his career, including a torn Achilles and knee issues that limited his playing time in recent seasons.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Clarke’s death. Multiple reports state there were no signs of foul play, though officials are reportedly looking into the possibility of an overdose after drug paraphernalia was allegedly discovered at the residence where he was found unresponsive. An official cause of death has not yet been released pending further investigation by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner.
The tragedy comes just weeks after Clarke faced legal troubles tied to a drug-related arrest in Arkansas, according to reports.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed condolences to Clarke’s family, friends, teammates, and fans, remembering him as a passionate player and respected member of the basketball community.
