Alabama Man Accused of Murder-Suicide that Claimed His Wife and Two Children

Daphne, Ala. — In a heartbreaking incident that has deeply shaken the community, Kenneth Smith Jr., 44, is suspected of fatally shooting his wife and two children in what officials are investigating as a murder-suicide.

Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery confirmed that deputies responded to a welfare check at the Smith family’s home on Sable Court Thursday morning. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Larrica Gaines Smith, 41, and their two children — 15-year-old Kristian Smith and 11-year-old Kensley Smith — all with gunshot wounds. Kenneth Smith Jr. was also found dead at the scene, believed to have taken his own life.

“We do believe this is going to be a multiple murder and suicide scene,” Sheriff Lowery said. “It’s as tragic as it comes.”

A Family Celebrating Just Weeks Ago

Neighbors expressed disbelief at the sudden violence, highlighting how recently the couple appeared happy.

“She just told me they celebrated their wedding anniversary two weeks ago and was happy about it, so I just don’t understand,” one neighbor said.
“To see a family gone … is awful,” another added.

Impact on Schools and Community Support

The children attended Daphne High School and Daphne East Elementary School. In response, local officials announced that counselors will be made available to support students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Investigation and Challenges Ahead

Investigators are actively trying to determine what may have prompted the incident, though Sheriff Lowery acknowledged the significant challenge:

“The suspected shooter is dead, so they may never get answers.” Still, forensic specialists are assisting the inquiry to uncover as much context as possible.
