Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler is officially bringing new life to one of television’s most iconic sci-fi franchises. Best known for directing blockbuster hits like Black Panther and the critically acclaimed Sinners, Coogler has secured a pilot greenlight at Hulu for his long-anticipated reboot of The X-Files, marking a major step forward in reimagining the beloved series for a new generation.
The project, produced by Onyx Collective and 20th Television, will star acclaimed actress Danielle Deadwyler as one of two highly decorated FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division tasked with investigating unexplained and paranormal phenomena.
A New Era of the Truth
According to reports, the reboot will center on two accomplished FBI agents who form an unlikely partnership while reopening cases tied to mysterious events and government conspiracies. While the new series will introduce fresh characters and storylines, it will remain rooted in the eerie investigative tone that made the original a cultural phenomenon.
Coogler will write and direct the pilot, continuing his expansion into television under his exclusive overall deal with Disney. The series will also be guided by showrunner Jennifer Yale.
Original The X-Files creator Chris Carter will serve as executive producer alongside Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler, ensuring the reboot honors its legacy while forging a bold new path.
Danielle Deadwyler Takes the Lead
Danielle Deadwyler continues her impressive rise in Hollywood with this major television role. She earned widespread acclaim for her performances in Till, The Harder They Fall, 40 Acres, and The Piano Lesson, and most recently appeared in The Woman in the Yard.
In the reboot, she will portray a lead FBI agent navigating cases involving extraterrestrials, secret experiments, and chilling unexplained threats — forming the emotional and investigative core of the series.
Honoring a Sci-Fi Classic
For those new to the franchise, the original series, created by Chris Carter, premiered in 1993 and became one of the defining science fiction dramas of the 1990s. It followed FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder — portrayed by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny — as they investigated alien encounters, paranormal activity, and deep-rooted government conspiracies.
The show became a cultural touchstone and influenced countless sci-fi and thriller series that followed.
What’s Next?
As of February 23, 2026, the pilot has officially received the green light, though no release date has been announced. The project remains in early development, but Hulu’s commitment signals strong confidence in Coogler’s vision.
