NC Police Investigates the Disappearance of Marissa Carmichael, Two Years After 911 Call

Two years after she vanished under troubling circumstances, police in Greensboro, North Carolina are once again appealing to the public for information in the disappearance of Marissa Carmichael, a 24-year-old mother of five who was last seen after making a distressed 911 call from a gas station early in the morning on January 14, 2024.

Greensboro Police Department (GPD) investigators say the case remains active and unresolved as they continue to urge anyone with tips or new information to come forward. A spokesperson for the department told reporters this week that authorities are “absolutely” still concerned for Carmichael’s welfare, noting that her being out of contact with family and far from her children is highly out of character.

Last Known Whereabouts and 911 Call
According to police reports and incident records, Carmichael was at an Exxon gas station on 809 East Market Street in Greensboro around 3:46 a.m. on Jan. 14, 2024, when she placed a 911 call in which she sounded distressed and disoriented. During the call, she told a dispatcher that a man had asked her to pick up items at the gas station but then drove off with her phone, leaving her stranded and unsure of her location. “I don’t know where I am in Greensboro … he took off with my phone. I have no clue where I’m at,” she told the dispatcher.

When officers arrived several minutes later, Carmichael was no longer at the scene, and surveillance footage later obtained by police shows her getting into a vehicle and leaving the gas station. That footage has not been publicly released due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Police previously identified and interviewed the driver of the vehicle seen in the surveillance video, who is currently considered a witness. However, authorities have not disclosed whether any suspects have been named or whether foul play is suspected.

Family’s Continued Plea for Answers
Carmichael’s family has continued to search for answers since her disappearance. Her mother, Sara Carmichael, and other relatives have spoken publicly about their heartbreak and lingering hope that Marissa will be found. They have highlighted how unusual it is for Marissa to have no contact with her children or loved ones and have participated in ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the case nationally.

The family’s outreach has included sharing her story with media outlets and reminding the public that any piece of information, no matter how small, could help break the case open.

Police Request Information
Investigators with the Greensboro Police Department have reiterated their call to the public for assistance. They encourage anyone who may have seen Carmichael on the day she disappeared, or who has any information about her whereabouts, to contact law enforcement or Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers. Tips can be shared anonymously.

As the case marks its second anniversary, authorities and family members alike maintain that Marissa Carmichael’s disappearance remains a critical and open investigation, and that renewed public engagement could be key to bringing clarity and closure.
