2-Year Old Mauled to Death by Babysitter’s Dogs

A tragic and preventable nightmare unfolded Saturday afternoon in Lowndes County, when two large Rottweiler dogs fatally mauled a 2-year-old boy entrusted to a home childcare provider. Law enforcement says the caregiver, who doubles as an unlicensed daycare operator, left the child unattended while she napped.

Victim Identified, Circumstances Unfold

The boy has been identified as Kaimir Jones, born September 18, 2023. His mother had earlier dropped him off at the home of 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb, who was operating what investigators say was an unlicensed daycare from her residence.

According to authorities, Cobb told them she had fallen asleep and believed the child was asleep as well. During that time — believed to be more than two hours — Kaimir apparently made his way into the backyard and unlocked or opened the kennel housing the two Rottweilers. The dogs escaped their enclosure and attacked him.

First responders arrived around 3:45 p.m., but the child was already deceased. Cobb was arrested at the scene and booked into the Lowndes County Jail.

Authorities also confiscated the two Rottweilers and a third dog from the property.

Charges, Investigation, and Reactions

Cobb faces felony charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges may be forthcoming.

Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan condemned the events as “a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred,” and expressed sympathy for the child’s family.

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) has launched its own investigation, highlighting that this case underscores the risks associated with unlicensed child care providers. A DECAL spokesperson said, “In Georgia, we take the safety and well-being of our children very seriously, and we are currently investigating the provider involved in this incident.”

Meanwhile, the child’s mother, Adrianna Jones, has spoken out, pleading for accountability and remembrance of her son’s name. “My baby needs justice,” she said, appealing to the public to help keep Kaimir Jones’ name alive.

A GoFundMe page established in Kaimir’s memory has already drawn contributions toward funeral expenses.

Broader Questions and Implications

This tragedy raises alarming questions about oversight, licensing, and safety in informal child care settings. The fact that Kaimir was the only child in Cobb’s care at the time, while she had capacity for up to 10 children on other days, underscores how devastating one moment of negligence can be.

Critics argue that more aggressive enforcement of licensing and regular inspections of babysitters and home daycare operations are urgently needed to prevent further catastrophes. The public is being reminded to verify credentials and compliance before entrusting children to caregivers.

As the legal process unfolds and more evidence emerges, hope remains that some measure of accountability can be attained — though no verdict can ever replace a life lost so prematurely.
