Police were responding to a report of a man, who we now know to be Steve Taylor — diagnosed with clinical depression and schizophrenia –, brandishing a bat, and possibly attempting a robbery.

Once officers arrived, they determined that the man did not commit a robbery, however officers attempted to take the man into custody.

Two officers deployed their Tasers, which they say did not have an effect.

A 20-year veteran officer then shot the man one time, killing him.

This is Steve Taylor. He was a beloved father, son, brother, and friend who was murdered in cold blood by the police yesterday at the Walmart in San Leandro. ⁣ ⁣ I have agreed to come on board the case alongside Attorney Lee Merritt to represent the family. ⁣ ⁣ Steve, sadly, was in the middle of a mental health emergency. He had been diagnosed with clinical depression and schizophrenia. Yesterday, when he was shot to death, he needed an ambulance. He needed medicine, doctors, and nurses. ⁣ ⁣ All around the world people in a mental health emergency, even with things like bats, knives, and even guns, are carefully surrounded, disarmed, then given treatment. ⁣ ⁣ Let me teach you something. California Police have, by law, what’s called “a use of force continuum.” Steve was mainly a danger to himself. He did not have gun or even a knife. He had a loosely held bat. When he was shot and killed, he was not swinging it. The use of force used did not meet the threat. ⁣ ⁣ ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION. ⁣ ⁣ It’s what I call “The Taylor Swift Test.” ⁣ ⁣ Would police have shot and killed Taylor Swift in this situation. I mean her, literally. ⁣ ⁣ If your answer is no, then Steve, too, should still be alive. ⁣ ⁣ Of course they would not have shot and killed Taylor Swift. She’s white, blonde, rich, famous, and privileged. The police would have done WHATEVER it took to get her to a hospital. They would’ve taken HOURS if needed. They would’ve surrounded her with shields and taken the bat, and safely got her to a hospital. ⁣ ⁣ Steve didn’t get that treatment for a very particular set of reasons that have EVERYTHING to do with him being a Black man in America. Black men do not get to have a mental health crisis in Walmart like Taylor Swift would. ⁣ ⁣ And that alone exposes the inequity of it all. ⁣ ⁣
