“In 2014, Eric Garner was filmed being choked out by the NYPD, resulting in his death. The altercation was a result of Garner expressing how frustrated he was with being harassed by the NYPD after being suspected of selling loose cigarettes. The officer who put Garner in a chokehold, Daniel Pantaleo, was brought before a grand jury but was not indicted. Despite the lack of indictment, Garner’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the NYPD and a few other officers for $75 million dollars in damages. Approximately one year later, the settlement was resolved out of court for $5.9 million.

Esaw Snipes received an up-front payment of $500,000 after a judge gave the order in November 2016. However, the widow is still living in public housing despite receiving money from the settlement. According to the New York City Housing Authority, she is allowed to keep her apartment in the Fulton Houses in Chelsea, and won’t be subjected to a rent increase. Esaw Snipes and her lawyer did not give a reason as to why she chooses to remain in public housing. Snipes was relocated to Manhattan by NYCHA after the death of her husband according to the NYPD.”
